Standing with City of Hope

As many of you know, for the last few months Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent has been sporting pretty pink tags in honor of us teaming up with City of Hope to help end the fight against breast cancer.  Twenty-five cents of the purchase price of our Deer & Rabbit Repellent is being donated to City of Hope for Breast Cancer research, treatment and education.  This has been an inspiring, ongoing campaign for all of us here at The Liquid Fence Company, which is why I would like to share with you another way to give back to City of Hope.

Thanks to a little help from Live Nation Entertainment, t-shirts featuring music artists, ranging from Madonna to Justin Bieber to Green Day are being sold in limited editions on the artist’s official websites and at City of Hope’s Web Shop.  The back of the shirts all display the phrase “Hope, Love and Rock n Roll, City of Hope – Saving Lives Worldwide” and 50%  of the retail price of the t-shirts will be donated to the organization.

So purchase a “Hope, Love and Rock n Roll, City of Hope” t-shirt.  They’d make great gifts, and you would be helping a very worthy organization.

The Dog Days of Summer

Keeping dogs and puppies cool and happy during scorching summer days can be a challenge.  Luckily we’ve put together a list of 5 great things that will help keep your dog carefree, comfy and of course cool.

1. Frozen dog treats: There are store bought varieties of these, but the recipes are so simple and preservative-free.  Here’s a link to an E-How article with multiple frozen treat options.

2. A travel water bowl: This water bowl is great, because it would easily slip into a purse or bag and it’s sturdy enough for at-the-park use.  But really any water bowl that can be easily packed for trips would do.  Dogs, just like people, need extra hydration on hot days.  Don’t forget the water and have some fun, bring a travel bowl along too!

3. Liquid Net for Pets: Hot tends to go hand-in-hand with buggy.  Whether it’s mosquitoes, gnats, fleas, ticks or black flies, Liquid Net for Pets has your dog covered.  Just one simple application of the eco-friendly formula is perfect for a day of outdoor fun!

4.  Cool toys: Dog toys, like this Chilly Bone are perfect for a little cool fun when the temperature starts to rise.  Even on hot days, most dogs have energy and want to play.  Bring along cool toys, plenty of water and try to not be out during the heat of the day.

5. Water: Nothing cools a dog off on a hot summer day quite like a dip in a lake, creek or pond.  Make sure the body of water is safe for swimming or wading into, and enjoy the all-natural cool-off method.

Zucchini Pancakes

With the deer staying far away from the garden thanks to Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent, the zucchini harvest is in abundance.  After I’ve made batches of zucchini bread, frozen bags of shredded zucchini that may or may not still be in the freezer next summer, and sufficiently fried and grilled thin slices of the baby zucchinis, the novelty of fresh-from-the-garden zucchinis begins to wear off.  I love zucchini pancakes, because they are just a little bit different from the typical zucchini fair.  They’re light enough for a side dish, while hearty enough to be a complete meal on an especially hot night.

Ingredients:
2 medium zucchini (about 3/4 pound)
2 tablespoons grated onion
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
6 to 8 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Unsalted butter and vegetable oil

Grate the zucchini into a bowl using the large grating side of a box grater. Immediately stir in the onion and eggs. Stir in 6 tablespoons of the flour, the baking powder, salt, and pepper.  Add the remaining 2 tbsp of flour only if the batter is too thin.

Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and melt 1/2 tablespoon butter and 1/2 tablespoon oil together in the pan. When the butter is hot but not smoking, lower the heat to medium-low and drop heaping tablespoons of batter into the pan. Cook the pancakes about 2 minutes on each side, until browned. Serve hot.

Welcome to the PLANET

The Liquid Fence Company has just joined PLANET, The Professional Landcare Network.  We are thrilled to be apart of this growing network of green industry professionals and organizations.  So what does this mean for Liquid Fence?

It means we will continue to be a leader in the green industry, when it comes to animal repellents, turf products and soil amendments.  And we’ll have the support of a dedicated group of professionals in the green land care world.

It also means we will be active in giving back through the Renewal & Remembrance event at Arlington National Cemetery.  Our head of the PRO Division, Eric Gerhartz will be on-hand for the event July 24-26 to work with other industry leaders in beautifying the national cemetery.

We are ecstatic to be working with such a great organization and look forward to contributing towards their mission of helping landscapers, growers, and PLANET members who create and enhance the world’s landscape.

Fish tales

The Liquid Fence Company sponsors Bass Pro Fisherman, Steve Wisdom.  Steve is a great fisherman, a new dad, a devoted husband, and a proud wearer of the Liquid Net Logo.  As a way to introduce you to Steve’s world, we’re going to start a series of fish tales.  We’ll give you updates from Steve and even some fun fishing facts.  But first, let’s start in the beginning.

Early Fish Tales:

Old fishing line and ripped up rubber worms in the bottom of a grounded boat may not seem like the ideal toy for a small boy, but for Steve Wisdom, the fishing scraps were hours of entertainment.  Until he could convince his grandfather to take him fishing, Steve practiced his techniques on the forgotten bits that had been left in the boat.  He spent hours rummaging around and imagining the day when he’d be allowed out on the water.

When Steve finally convinced his grandfather to take him fishing, he could hardly contain his excitement.

“I was more excited that day than any one Christmas morning to date,” Steve said.

His first fish? Well it was a bass of course! He caught it on that very first fishing trip, and, at 6 years old, Steve Wisdom knew what he was going to do it for the rest of his life.

“As a kid it was all I ever talked about. When people asked me what  I wanted to be when I grew up, I would tell them ‘A professional fisherman!’” Steve said.

And the rest? Well even Steve likes to fast forward when he’s talking about his life so far.  After college, he took a job in the fishing industry doing marketing and promotions for a small lure company.  While at the lure company, he started fishing professionally.  His 6-year-old dream had actually come true. And to think it all started with ripped rubber worms and old fishing wire in a grounded boat.

5 ways to beat an itchy mosquito season

Mosquitoes season is in full swing and, according to news outlets across the country, this is going to be an extra problematic year thanks to a very rainy spring.

In order to control the continually blooming bug population and make sure you can enjoy outdoor time this summer, here are a few easy-to-follow tips to keep your local mosquito population to a minimum and the mosquito season a little less itchy.

1. Dump it. Look in your neighborhood and around your property for standing water.  Water sitting stagnant for 4 days or more will quickly become a breeding ground for the bothersome biting bugs.

2. Don’t forget the gutter! Remember clogged gutters can be prime targets, and they often go unnoticed.  So don’t forget your gutters, when looking for standing water.

3. Buy some fish. With the increasing popularity of ornamental ponds, small or large, it’s important to remember to maintain the pond with a pump to circulate the water.  Also, add goldfish, koi or some other small fish to eat lingering mosquito eggs.

4. Keep it shut. To protect your indoors from mosquitoes, make sure your windows and doors are closed tightly.  Also be sure to fix screens on windows and doors to prevent indoor mosquito invasions.

5. Stock up on Liquid Net! If you’re spending time outdoors, apply Liquid Net Insect Repellent!  The eco-friendly formula is safe, even for small children.  And for your furry friends, apply Liquid Net for Pets!

An ounce of prevention can make the world of difference, so be sure to be on the look-out for ways you can prevent mosquito breeding and apply Liquid Net
before you go outside.  It’s the Planet Approved way to stay biting bug free!

16 Million pounds and counting: How Jeff Lowenfels is helping fight hunger in America and abroad.

We are excited to announce our second Asset to the Planet, Jeff Lowenfels, author of the book Teaming with Microbes and garden columnist for the Anchorage Daily News.  Jeff is not new to awards and accolades.  One of only 21 writers in The Garden Writer’s Hall of Fame, Jeff has earned the title of Longest Running Garden Columnist (and perhaps any columnist) with his 36+ year run with the Anchorage Daily News.

When he wasn’t giving Alaskan gardeners tips, Jeff was busy as an energy lawyer and, more recently, as an advocate for America’s hungry.  While on a business trip to Washington DC, Jeff encountered a homeless man begging for money to buy food.  Despite the spare change in his pocket, Jeff walked by the man and returned to his hotel room.  But the image of the poor man and the plight of the homeless continued to occupy his thoughts.  In fact, the meeting was a turning point for Jeff, prompting him to start Plant a Row for the Hungry.

The program encourages gardeners to plant an extra row in their gardens to donate to a local soup kitchen or food bank.  The first Plant a Row project raised produce for Bean’s Café, an Anchorage, Alaska soup kitchen.  The program is now about to go international with more than 16 million pounds of fresh produce having been donated since 1994.  For more information about how you can get involved with Plant a Row for the Hungry, visit the program’s webpage or call the toll-free hotline.

We are really honored to have Jeff Lowenfels join our Assets to the Planet.  He embodies our ideal of making our planet a little bit better, or in Jeff’s case over 16 million pounds of fresh produce better.

If you know a person or organization who makes the world we live in just a little bit more inhabitable, nominate them to be the next Asset to the Planet! At the end of the year we’ll have our fans, followers, and readers vote for the year’s favorite Asset to the Planet.

Greek Salad

As the summer produce starts to pour in, this fresh-from-the-garden treat becomes a regular side to all of my backyard BBQs and picnics.  It is light, refreshing and doesn’t include mayonnaise, which tends to be a big worry for most picnic goers.

If you’re growing cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers in your garden, remember to protect your produce with Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent.  It’s safe for use on edible crops and guaranteed protection for all of your plants. And for serious rabbit problems, use Liquid Fence Dual Action Rabbit Repellent.

Greek Salad:

3 medium-sized tomatoes, diced
3 cucumbers, diced
2 medium-sized green peppers seeded and diced
5-10 Kalamata olives (or 10-15 green olives)
1 tbsp capers
1/4 – 1/2 pound feta cheese
1/3 cup olive oil
1 tsp oregano
Salt and black pepper to taste

Add the tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, olives and capers into a large bowl. Crumble the feta cheese and add to the bowl with the other ingredients. Add the oregano and olive oil. Make sure everything is well-combined. Season with salt and pepper. Serve chilled

Strawberry Nutella Cream Pie

For lunch we are having a Memorial Day picnic in the office.  I was given the job of desserts and, with the consistently hot weather all week, I struggled to find a oven-free treat.

I decided on this Nutella Cream Pie last night.  The recipe was part I-love-Nutella, part too-lazy-to-make-mousse.  It turned out delicious.  The strawberries came from my patch – thanks to Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent Granular I’m harvesting more than ever and the bunnies haven’t even taken a nibble.

This dessert would be a great addition to a Memorial Day picnic; it’s super easy and of course oven-free.

1 Oreo Cookie Crust (premade in a pie pan)*
1/2 cup Nutella
2 tbsp. milk
6 oz. cream cheese
1/2 cup of confectioner sugar
8 oz. container of Cool Whip
7-8 strawberries

Cream the cream cheese and sugar with a blender.  Add the Nutella and milk.  Mix until smooth.  Be sure to scrape the bottom of the bowl as it doesn’t always mix evenly.  Fold in the Cool Whip.  Pour into the pie pan.  Slice strawberries and layer in a circle on the top of the pie.  Chill and serve.

*It was really too hot to use the oven, which is why I chose to use a pre-made crust.  You could, of course, buy the cookie crumbs and make the crust from scratch.

5 camping accoutrements you might forget

The key to a successful camping trip is proper planning.  But of course there are always a few odds and ends that get forgotten until you are almost at the campsite.  That is why the camping experts at The Liquid Fence Company have compiled a list of camping-worthy items you’ll want in your backpacks or campers.

1. Insect Repellent: Black flies, gnats, mosquitoes and other biting bugs can turn any camping trip or hike into a miserable, and sometimes itchy, experience.  Protect your whole family (even the furry ones) with the complete line of DEET-free Liquid Net products.  These eco-friendly products are made of all-natural botanical oils and the non-greasy formula comes in  convenient towelettes and sprays, perfect for the on-the-go camper.

2. Water Bottles: Reusable water bottles are a great way to reduce waste and stay hydrated while camping.  The Vapur Water Bottle is a  BPA-free water bottle that goes a step beyond, folding and fitting almost anywhere.  And they come with a convenient clip!

3. Snake Repellent: Slithering snakes can be a campers nightmare.  Keep snakes away from your campsite with Liquid Fence Snake Repellent Granular.  It’s easy-to-apply and long lasting.  Creating a snake-free campsite has never been easier.

4. Flashlights: Aside from the perfect accompaniment to a scary story around the campfire, flashlights tend to be most needed when it’s too dark to find them.  Camping Lanterns are great at illuminating a large space, but a few carefully placed flashlights will also do the trick.

5. First Aid Kit: No camping trip would be complete without someone getting hurt.  OK while we hope and pray this is not your experience, the laws of spending time running around a campsite tend to lean towards someone needing at least a band-aid, during a typical camping trip.  That is why it is so important to keep an updated First Aid Kit and knowing where the nearest hospital is, in case of emergency.

The secret to a successful camping trip is to always be ready for anything.  Pack these must-haves and at least you’ll be on the right track.  Have a safe and enjoyable camping season; and try not to forget anything!
